December 2009: In an interview with DIE ZEIT, a leading German newspaper, Chandran Nair spoke about the importance and urgency for the East and the West to resolve its differences, often clashes over value systems, in order to achieve sustainable development. Nair argued that the hyper-capitalistic system which Western democracies have promoted for the past 100 years has been detrimental to the environment and society as it favors individual interests over the common good. He suggested that at a first glance, it may appear authoritarian to allow governments to regulate things such as consumption, which is excessive in the West, however it is necessary if we are to mitigate the consequences of the current system.
