India Model Village Enterprise Project
January 5-16, 2009
The Global Institute for Tomorrow (GIFT) is recruiting young executives to participate in its Global Young Leaders Programme (YLP) taking place from January 5-16, 2009 in Hong Kong and New Delhi. The field component of the programme will be held in rural communities where a significant part of the population has not seen the economic benefits of India’s rapid development.
Participants will work closely with Drishtee - a social enterprise that has adopted a sustainable development model to promote local entrepreneurship and rural development across India. They will work closely with the enterprise to develop a business plan detailing how the participants can best implement its Model Village concept which entails the formation of a for-profit village company established by members of the village community.

The programme will begin with an MBA-style classroom module in Hong Kong during which participants will examine topics such as: globalisation, civil society, role of government, business ethics, diversity and corporate social responsibility. They will then apply these concepts in a week long experience on-site in rural India, where they will work closely with Drishtee and community members to develop a business plan. The plan produced by the team will form the basis upon which GIFT will subsequently seek to identify sources of investment for the project.
Whilst in the field, participants will examine the overall model adopted by the enterprise which uses a Model Village concept whereby members of the community form a for-profit company in order to provide basic infrastructure services to the village population while producing returns to investors. The products and support received from Drishtee for these services will vary by village in order to meet the unique demands and needs of each community. The Model Village concept is built on Drishtee’s earlier successes in using ICT technology and business process (BPO) work to promote local entrepreneurship in rural villages.
The YLP
The Global Young Leaders Programme was included as a commitment at the inaugural Bill Clinton Global Initiative in 2005. Past participants have included executives from Standard Chartered, UBS, HP, JP Morgan, Shell, CLSA, Beijing Li Ning Sports, MTRC, Cheung Kong Group, Cathay Pacific, Shui On Group among others. This is an excellent opportunity for executives to develop cross-cultural leadership skills through hands-on experience while having a positive impact on local communities.
